What It Looks Like
Facilitate the highest quality outcomes – and the results your business needs - by integrating adult learning theory, how the brain learns and a participant-centered approach. This course has a clear results-orientation built around management systems like Lean, Six Sigma, ISO and COPC and is ideal for, but not limited to, personnel in deployment roles, such Master Black Belts. In this five day course, participants explore the five hats worn by the best facilitators: Presenter, Trainer, Facilitator, Coach and Consultant and learn how to successfully change hats while facilitating group processes, pulling the best results from any team. They learn to apply core facilitation skills such as orchestrating multiple sub-groups simultaneously with polished, professional instructions; implementing powerful graphics and visuals; and maximizing participant contributions with questioning templates and conflict management alternatives. Participants build a kit of five tools to help teams tackle any problem or project. Through a customized, blended learning approach, including individual assessment tools, participants evaluate their current mastery of facilitation. With engaging activities and targeted simulation events, participants experience proven tools, techniques and theories, then apply new knowledge and skills during lab time. They hone facilitation skills in a safe environment with feedback from the Facilitator and their peers and develop a continuous learning action plan for maximum results.

What Lockheed Martin participants say about the customized version of the Art of Facilitation they experienced with Cindy Rae Pautzke:
We had a Kaizen last week and the team was small, 7 people; however, using the poster sheets for welcoming and the groundrules on the floor really got their attention — so much so — that they actually stopped and turned off their cells ang pagers! And they had smiles on their faces! I also used the path for the agenda with icons — they truly enjoyed figuring out what was next on the agenda. And the most improvement for me was using the high sign for bringing them back into focus — no defenses were up by the team, they played so well! Being keyed into watching body language really enabled me to become a better facilitator — one of my ‘but's, but's’ persons actually turned around to embrace the process and our Champion and Sponsor were simply amazed as to that person’s transformation — they actually saw this person take pride in their work and especially closing on the product! WhoHoooo! The laminated cards were excellent! When we were doing a debrief at the end of the day(s), the most common thought expressed was that I took a mundane subject that was also volatile (don’t know how those two get together) and made it fun — they loved the humor and also the graphics used to show progress. Thank you all for your help in teaching, sharing and learning together! The time spent in Bethesda for Adv. Facilitation Training was absolutely wonderful and beneficial to me, my management and the teams that are on the events I’m working!
Thank you.

I had an event last week just as we completed our Advanced Facilitation training class and I made an effort to change how I facilitate my events and I have to say it made a big difference in my performance and the team’s performance.
Some of the things I did:
- Rearranged the room into 3 tables
- Moved the team around randomly or not, the deck of cards I traded up for came in handy
- Really paid attention to make the environment safe for everyone (somewhat new for me)
- Used graphics
- Engaged the tables as teams when I could
- I asked "What questions do you have?" — it is amazing how much difference this makes!
- And I referred to my laminated facilitator guide as I was preparing for the next day (great tool)
These are just some of the things I did and the event was more organized, progressed at a faster pace and the team was happy (I think they didn’t feel beaten up). One thing I noticed was I had a more time to assess where the team was and setup for the next tool, for example brainstorming, etc.
I am glad I had the opportunity to participate in this training it has helped me improve my effectiveness as a facilitator and I hope to continue to grow, making more changes along the way.
Thank you: Dennis, Mina, and Cindy
